How Much Wedding Cake Do You Need?

Planning your wedding cake is one of the sweetest parts of the process—but figuring out how much cake you actually need can feel surprisingly complicated. Should you order enough for every guest? What about extra slices? And how big should your cake tiers be?

How Many Servings Do You Need?

A good rule of thumb:

Plan for 75–85% of your guest count.

Why not 100%?

  • Not every guest will eat cake
  • Some guests share
  • Many weddings also serve other desserts

Example:

  • 100 guests → plan for 75–85 servings
  • 150 guests → plan for 110–125 servings

This helps avoid waste while still making sure everyone who wants cake gets a slice.

Standard Wedding Cake Serving Sizes

Wedding cake slices are typically smaller than party cake slices.

  • Wedding slice: about 1” x 2”
  • Party slice: about 1.5” x 2”

Because of this, tiered wedding cakes can serve more people than you might expect.

Wedding Cake Size Guide

Here’s a general idea of what different tier sizes serve:

  • 6” tier → ~12 servings
  • 8” tier → ~24 servings
  • 10” tier → ~38 servings
  • 12” tier → ~56 servings

Example combinations:

  • Small wedding (50–60 guests): 6” + 8” + 10”
  • Medium wedding (80–120 guests): 6” + 8” + 10” + 12”
  • Larger wedding (150+ guests): cake + kitchen sheet cake

Do You Need Cake for Every Guest?

Not always!

Many couples choose to:

  • Serve a smaller display cake
  • Supplement with sheet cake in the kitchen
  • Offer a dessert table alongside cake

This lets you:

  • Keep your design elegant and manageable
  • Stay within budget
  • Still serve all your guests

Design vs. Servings (What Matters Most?)

Here’s something couples don’t always realize:

Your cake design doesn’t have to match your serving count exactly

We can:

  • Add dummy tiers for height and drama
  • Use kitchen cakes for extra servings
  • Design something that looks stunning and serves your needs

This is especially helpful for:

  • Tall, elegant wedding cakes
  • Floral or sugar flower designs
  • Budget-conscious weddings

What About Leftovers?

Some couples love having extra cake, others don’t.

If you want leftovers:

  • Add ~10-15 extra servings

If not:

  • Stick to the 75-85% rule

Also keep in mind:

Many couples save their top tier for their anniversary.

Choosing the Right Cake for Your Wedding

The perfect wedding cake balances:

  • Guest count
  • Design style
  • Budget
  • Venue setup
